How Can I be The Chairperson of My Major Association?
I started my journey in university as a usual freshman. There are numerous organizations on my campus that I can join. However, since it was my first year in college, I would like to join an organization that I think has a small scale and less activity which is a major association. However, my perception was wrong once I joined.
Traced back to my freshman era, I registered myself with that organization by submitting the required documents. I registered myself to two preference divisions which are Academic Division and Foreign Affairs Division. The recruitment process consists of several steps starting from document selection, the first interview session, leadership training vol.1, leadership training vol.2, until the second interview session. Gratefully, I passed all of the recruitment processes with numerous ups and downs. I get to be a member of the Academic Division which is my first preference division.
After finishing one period, handling a great number of events, become a project manager, vice project manager, event organizer, and so forth, I decided to not continue my journey in the organization since I think that I have gotten enough experience for my future career and I want to focus more on my academic in the senior year.
I have extensively convinced myself that I will not continue to the second term in my organization. If my friends asked me whether I continue or not, I always answer them by saying I'll not continue my second term.
However, after a bunch of supportive arguments from my senior and my friends regarding whether I should continue my second term, and after many considerations whether what I'll do if I leave the organization, I decided to continue my second term. It was quite shocking and great news for many people. However, the most shocking news for everyone is not the fact that I continue my second term but the fact that I decided to become the Chairperson of the organization.
Yes, I know it is a big decision. My decision to become a Chairperson was not only because of the senior and my friends who saw my capability but also because of my dad's statement and my thought that it is a golden opportunity that I can take. When I ask my dad "Do you think I should become a Chairperson or not?" My dad said "Sweetheart, all of the leaders out there must have experience becoming a leader in their organization at least once in their lifetime, and if you think you can balance your responsibility as a Chairperson and as a student, why not? take that opportunity". At that time, I immediately believe that I should take this opportunity.
Once I commit to becoming a Chairperson, the training is also different from the other candidates who want to join the organization, obviously, it is twice harder. Nevertheless, I still manage to overcome them with tears sometimes.
It is not easy as it seems, as I imagined in the first phase. Thankfully, I can pass all of the training processes to become a Chairperson until the announcement of the candidate who gets the opportunity to the public debate section. After giving my best at the public debate, and waiting for the voting announcement, I did not expect even a little that people will choose me as their Chairperson. However, the voting shows that they want me as the next Chairperson.
It was at the time when I was delighted but also worried at the same time. It was an honor to lead the international relations student at my university but it is also a great and risky responsibility that I should be taking care of.
Indeed, it is one of the stepping stones in my life, learning to face numerous behavior and thought and at the same time respected by people with that title.
